Blog Post #10 – Assignment #1 Reflection

Upon reflection, I think my classmate, Imryn, and I did a good job in our presentation. Our process for undertaking the assignment was fairly simple. We reviewed the document provided to us which included a description of the problem we were to solve. We then tried to research the question on our own, and learn more about the Egyptian methodology for multiplication, and any associated history with the problem itself.

We had much to learn! It was pretty cool to see articles online discuss how the word problem of Ahmes was going to St. Ives has travelled around the world through word of mouth over thousands of years. A nursery rhyme which many children might hear today, is in its exact form, aside from the names of people and items used, of a word problem used in ancient Egyptian times. Fascinating!

There is one area of the presentation I have been reflecting on to think about how we could’ve done better. When we introduced the problem and asked our classmates to complete it using ancient Egyptian methods we’ve learned in class, many had forgotten what that method was. It took some time to remind everyone of the method without giving away too many hints, therefore solving the problem for them. Overall though, I thought we did a good job presenting our problem while learning much in the process!

Here are our slides (sorry these are out of order):
